How to Win a Game of Poker Without Knowing the Rules

A clueless cowboy struts into a Wild West saloon and sits at a poker table, oblivious to the game. Using charm and absurd bluffs, he fakes his way through, confusing the other players. Mimicking pros and tossing in random jargon, he raises the stakes by pushing all his chips in, bluffing with a terrible hand. Miraculously, he wins by sheer luck, leaving his opponents shocked.

What I Learned

Animating demands significant time, patience, and perseverance. This was my first experience creating a character rig from a frontal perspective, which turned out to be more challenging than I expected. My goal was to ensure the character and scenes worked cohesively by balancing color and texture throughout the animation. I enjoyed the hours spent refining the rig and exploring new animation techniques along the way!

Stylin' the Narrative

Utilizing the effectiveness of style frames as a bridge between storyboarding and the actual animation was essential. These style frames established the overall look and feel that was slightly modified in the final animation. Determining the right color palette and appearance of the cowboy character were crucial first steps to success before any animation could begin.

Sketching
the Storyline

A key phase in the process was when the script transitioned into visual storytelling. Determining the number of scenes and key moments that drove the narrative required multiple rounds of storyboarding and refinement. A significant challenge was conveying the cowboy character's emotions without relying on speech or sight. The focus was on using emphatic body movements to effectively express the character's emotional state.
