Packaging

Kente Bites

The goal was to create a chocolate brand that is used to promote the history, and stories of chocolate makers, as well as give gratitude to the multicultural side that Chocolate provides to various places within Africa. This chocolate packaging is a concept pitched to be put into the Penn State Creamery.

My approach was to create engaging chocolate packaging that visually represents the African traditions of chocolate making, whilst providing real-life stories from chocolate makers that consumers can share with their friends and families for a lifetime.

What I Learned

Creating a chocolate bar that embraces the culture and pays homage to Africa, where most of the world's chocolate is produced, was an eye-opening experience. It taught me about the horrendous treatment of workersnearly half of whom are children. I approached this project with the utmost respect, striving to honor African chocolate makers by incorporating their traditions and cultures into the design and story of the product.

From Print
to Product

A glimpse into the production process of Kente Bites chocolate. Navigating different die lines and printing various iterations with small changes helped ensure the brand remained authentic and enticing to consumers. The final product was showcased in a photoshoot, highlighting the decadent chocolate I made at the Penn State Creamery alongside the finished packaging in two different flavors.

Unfolding
the Pattern

The chocolates pattern was inspired by the iconic Kente cloth, which also influenced the name Kente Bites. This seamless pattern alternates between two colors to distinguish each flavor. Hidden within the pattern is an abstract lionpaying homage to one of Africas most iconic animals while also nodding to Penn State.

The Process

Chocolate Making

I had the chance to join my fellow classmates with a trip to the Penn State Creamery. We were advised on how chocolate is manufactured and able to mold our own chocolate bars.

Create

Creating the concept of Kente Bites stemmed research and additional studies which were used to investigate how chocolate production affects the economic standing of specific countries in Africa. I catered the design to cultures within Ghana and Nigeria.

Craft

Experimenting with different die lines that were not your standard chocolate bar packaging was a goal of mine. Through trial and error I was able to land on an option that was unique and furthered the storytelling of the chocolate.

Curate

Utilizing the final die lines, which were crafted and assembled using only folds, I paired the packaging with the chocolate to tell a story through product photography and to effectively market the product.
